'The World Days' was MH's debut novel, his earlier works being more essay-like in their composition. The style of writing is flavoured by a tongue-in-cheek'ish charm, a romantic pathos with a poetic exuberance. In general it was very well received, a few reviews making reference to both Franz Kafka and Boris Vian.
On the cover of the book the following introduction was given: "'The World Days' is a wild and adventurous tale, an absurd farce about friendship, love and the dream of the impossible. The story is enacted in a timeless Europe where both myth and reality no longer seems to be separable, neither for the reader or the involved parties. The title refers to the prophecy of a hundred days where the angels are said to descend from heaven. 'The World Days' is an epic tale from the great wide open and a very amusing piece of writing for both misanthrope and phantasist, poet and romantic."
The book was suggested as a candidate to Politiken's (a major Danish newspaper) list of the 100 best Danish books in the twentieth century. |
