Recorded September 5th 1983 at The National Danish Radio.

Notes:
Simultaneously with the release of Hall's high-profile album 'Music Hall' (see separate link), Panoptikon - in cooperation with the National Danish Radio, DR - also released his at the time scandalous, but soon to become legendary 1983 radio house concert 'Inskription' in relation to its 20 years jubilee. MH's performance on September the 5th 1983 is still regarded as one of the highpoints of the musical avant-garde in the early 80's, a then groundbreaking event that blasted out the classical audience in the concert hall at the time of its appearance.

Martin Hall's 40 minute long work was written for violin and voice and was performed with the added value of a series of tape recorders, echo chambers and sound modules. As already pointed out, 'Inskription' was performed in the concert hall of the National Danish Radio in relation to this year's (1983) grants to new talents made by the National Fund for the Endowment of The Arts, which included MH as one of the four recipients. At the time he was 20 years old. Being given the grant for his work in the field of electro-acoustic music, MH shocked the audience completely by generating a noise level never before heard in the history of the Danish Radio. This (alongside many other reactions) made the Danish newspaper Information review the concert under the headline "Sound Spanking"!

Since then 'Inskription' has reached the status of legend among young experimental artists and composers due to its vanguard importance. Being the probably best documented piece of "Zeitgeist" of the early 80's in the Danish electro-acoustic underground, the performance stands out as a striking piece of defiance against the conservative art of the times in which it emerged, and the fact that it was an early inspiration for a lot of musicians on the later very successful Danish electronica-scene hopefully doesn't need any further explanation. As an example, the Danish industrial band Wäldchengarten performed a new version of MH’s original score at a concert in Århus, Jutland, on September 11 2003, a week after the release of the original concert.

The CD 'Inskription' contains a lot of additional material such as essays and articles written by Henrik Marstal (author of acclaimed Danish book on the development of electronic music, "Filtreringer") and Steffen B. Pedersen from the Danish music magazine Geiger. You can read a translation of the latter - an article focusing on 'Inskription's relation to the genres rock and industrial (whereas Henrik Marstal's essay strictly relates to its classical connections) - in the biography section.
