The Danish book Changes is a literary statement about David Bowie’s legacy written and edited by the Danish journalists Klaus Lynggard and Henrik Queitsch.

Originally the book was planned to mark the singer’s 70th birthday in January 2017, but when Bowie died in the beginning of 2016 the editors wanted the writing to become a collective memory written by a line of Danish artists and journalists.

Apart from the two main authors the book includes reflections and essays written by contributors such as Martin Hall, Asger Schnack, Kristian Leth, Benn Q. Holm, Ralf Christensen, Jakob Levinsen, Lars Movin, Jens Unmack, Jan Laursen, Bo Green Jensen, Signe Høirup Wille-Jørgensen, Søren E. Jensen, Lars Bukdahl, Nicolaj Stochholm, Katrine Nyland Sørensen, Anna Ullmann, Anne Sperling, Pernille Jensen and Kira Skov.

The cover is made by the Danish painter Lars Ravn. The book is designed by Sigrún Gudbrandsdóttir.

ROBIN SKJOLDBORG/ROBERTO ZACHARIAS
PHOTO AND INTERVIEW BOOK
NOVEMBER 2014
GYLDENDAL (ISBN 9788702165838)

The book Men (“Mænd”) consists of a selection of Danish top photographer Robin Skjoldborg’s male portraits taken in the period between 1984 and 2014. Among the recurrent faces portrayed in the 256 pages thick volume you’ll find artists such as Martin Hall and Jesper Binzer, singer in one of the most successful Danish rock bands ever, D.A.D.

The theme of the photo- and debate book is male identity – i.e. sexuality, gender and values. Towards this end the journalist Roberto Zacharias has interviewed a line of the portrayed artists such as Danish filmmaker Jørgen Leth, actor Lars Mikkelsen (featured on the front cover of the book), the rock groups Kashmir and Nephew and ultimately Martin Hall. It probably comes as no surprise that the latter is the far most outspoken in this selection of masculine profiles.

ANTHOLOGY
JUNE 2011
OEVERSTE KIRURGISKE (ISBN 978-87-92623-01-0)

In the beginning of June 2011 the 52nd edition of the literature magazine Oeverste Kirurgiske was released, a publication to which Martin Hall contributed with a writing called ”Memoirs”. The text was accompanied by a drawing made by its author.

This edition of Oeverste Kirurgiske is a thematic issue about ”neo-baroque”, a concept that the publishers – by their own admission – knew very little about. As they wrote about the subject on their website: ”The result of our common endeavours will be the latest and most up-to-date baroque that the world has so far seen … no baroque is any newer”.

Among the other contributors you’ll find names such as Thomas Krogsbøl, Nikolaj Zeuthen, Jens Blendstrup, Martin Budtz, Sternberg, Irmelin Henriette Prehn, Jeolytta Ming Wangsgaard and Grzegorz Wróblewski.

Oeverste Kirurgiske, roughly translated, means “the top floor surgical department” – a name taken from the former residents on the address of the magazine’s editorial office.

The publication consists of 142 pages and is designed by OK Layout with illustrations made by Michael Rassum.

INTERVIEWS
SEPTEMBER 2009
JYLLANDS-POSTENS FORLAG (ISBN 978-87-567-9337-7)

Among a line of Danish top executives and MP’s Martin Hall was invited to participate in the book Authenticity on the matter of modern business management and ethics. During his contribution – the longest chapter in the book – Hall presents a series of sharp and precise analyses of the general “wage earner mentality of the Danish society” compared to the more nomadic state of working as an artist.

Martin Hall’s background to figure alongside the book’s long list of prominent Danish businessmen/women – people such as Christian Stadil (owner of Hummel), Flemming Østergaard (chairman of the board of directors in Parken Sport & Entertainment A/S), Margrethe Vestager (Member of Parliament and chairman of Det Radikale Venstre) as well as Peter Mogensen (political commentator and chief sub-editor on the newspaper Politiken) – was Hall’s increasing work with the industry in general. As a frequent guest in business establishments such as Maersk, Grundfos, Rambøll as well as Novo Nordisk he had shown himself capable of communicating great idealism as well as to exercise the needed critical approach to the basic concept of business as a whole.

Charlotte Mandrup, author of Authenticity: “As the highly respected and critically acclaimed artist Martin Hall is, he simply embodies the moral and personal authenticity that basically everyone in the business world seeks.”

DIE SCHÖNSTEN WEIHNACHTSGESCHICHTEN AUS SKANDINAVIEN

ANTHOLOGY
SEPTEMBER 2007
LIST (ISBN 978-3471795484)

In September 2007 Martin Hall made his literary debut in Germany with a contribution to the anthology Die schönsten Weihnachtsgeschichten aus Skandinavien – “the most wonderful christmas stories from Scandinavia”. The publishing company List had succeeded in getting the immensely popular Danish singer and entertainer Gitte Haenning to gather some of her favourite Christmas stories as well as writing the foreword in the book, thus introducing the readers to her appreciation of the Scandinavian Christmas traditions.

Martin Hall’s contribution to the book, however, is anything but a traditional Christmas story. His story is called “Nine Cigarettes” and is a barren, alienated tale of a man’s homecoming to his family at Christmas time. The entire narrative is enacted in the room where this character used to live as a boy, in the hours before he has to join his family at the dinner table. The novel originally appeared in the Danish publishing agency Lindhardt og Ringhof’s anthology Christmas Stories released in 1998.

Among the others contributors to Die schönsten Weihnachtsgeschichten aus Skandinavien you’ll find authors such as August Strindberg, Herman Bang and H.C. Andersen.

ANTHOLOGY
JUNE 2003
GYLDENDAL (ISBN 87-02-00409-7)

Back then in the 80’s is an anthology made up of interviews, photo series and articles about the eighties and the generation of young Danish creative minds that formed the local scene and youth culture at the time.

Focusing particularly on the underground scene of the period, one of the book’s most extensive articles is an interview with Martin Hall about Ballet Mécanique, the music group he started as a young artist.

In a very open-hearted chapter Hall tells his version of the story of the group – from its beginning to its much publicised breakup live on stage in October 1982.
